Learning, Development and Embracing the Culture of Asset Management in Canada

Canada is a very large country with one of the largest road networks in the world. Unfortunately, the country ranks only 38th in terms of population. This results in significant challenges in funding the needs of the road network. In addition, unlike many other countries, Canada does not have a national agency responsible for design, standards, specifications, construction, maintenance and funding of the road network. Each of the Provinces and Territories in Canada is responsible for the higher-level network which comprises approximately 20 percent of the network. There are approximately 5,000 municipalities in Canada and they are responsible for 80% of the roadways in the country.
